2022.01.22 06:15 LordHughRAdumbass Thought for the Day: The Scientist as Modern Magician.

Space-cadets and Apocal-pessimists of the sort that live in California and name their kids John Galt if they are boys, or some anagram of Ayn Rand if they are girls ("Ann dray"?), have a ritual incantation that they use in almost all their gushings in print or online. Presumably to dog whistle that they are at least aspiring members of the Jachin and Boaz cult, if not birthright or blood-ritual members, they habitually invoke a ritual incantation or spell with this particular quote:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
- Arthur C. Clarke, "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination"
On the surface (and below), Clarke's truism is obvious to the point of silliness. Why even mention it? Why get excited about it? It tells us nothing we didn't already know, or could easily observe for ourselves every time we see yet another (yawn!) consumer-tech gizmo and go, "Wow, that's magic!". While the Arthurian utterance tells us nothing in itself, the obsession with that quote opens up vast vistas into the minds of a Transhumanist or Progressive (assuming of course that "vast vistas" is an appropriate way to describe the interior of a modest snuff box).
Unboxing the styrofoam from Clarke's "Third Law" 🤪, one can easily divine the following. Firstly, that the "off (on) their rocket" brigade are normative products of the scientific-military-industrial schooling system. They have been successfully indoctrinated into the "Enlightenment" faith that, contrary to what almost everyone believed up until Francis Bacon, magic of the Harry Potter kind is pure fantasy and illegitimate. So accordingly, "magic" per se is just an archaic trick. The Last Magician was Sir Isaac Newton - the first scientist.
Which begs the question, "what exactly is a 'trick'" and why does Arthur C. seem to imply that given enough trickery then magic is no longer mere fantasy, as they schooled us in taught?
trick (n.)
Early 15c., "a cheat, a mean ruse," from Old North French trique "trick, deceit, treachery, cheating," from trikier "to deceive, to cheat," variant of Old French trichier "to cheat, trick, deceive," of uncertain origin, probably from Vulgar Latin *triccare, from Latin tricari "be evasive, shuffle," from tricæ "trifles, nonsense, a tangle of difficulties," of unknown origin.
Meaning "a roguish prank" is recorded from 1580s; sense of "the art of doing something" is first attested 1610s. Meaning "prostitute's client" is first attested 1915; earlier it was U.S. slang for "a robbery" (1865).
What's the PIE root word for "trick"?
There is none. Proto-Indo Europeans didn't know the concept of "trick" in our sense of "magic trick" because they believed in magic. After all, they had the evidence of their own eyes that magic is real. We do too, but we absolutely refuse to look until Quantum Science or large-scale Cosmology absolutely forces us to. At that point our Overlords helicopter in to insist that we can only go further in a sanitized, scientific "safe zone" with adequate baby-fencing. Bill Nye, deGrasse Tyson, Michael Shermer or their ilk will nanny us along to make sure we don't deviate from pure mental hygiene, or stray from Faith in the Trick, so that we (i.e. they, funded by us) can find and disclose "The Great Trick" (The TOE, always just perpetually out of reach over the horizon). In the meantime children, use the sacred hex ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ to ward off heretical thoughts and magic.
The concept of "trick" in the sense of "fake magic" is a 15th Century idea - an idea that was ushered into the mainstream, ironically enough, with The Enlightenment and Newton himself. With his Principia Mathematica, he (and Leibniz, along with a few other hangers-on) cast a spell to banished magic forever and replaced it with the soul-destroying tyranny of the "mundane explanation" and the "humdrum life". It was really just an outrageous power grab, and the grab is still ongoing as we suffer the Scientific hegemony of the Cøv1d-era 300 years later (hence the need for obfuscation in the word Cøv1d to hide heresies and any "attacks" on Science).
Who did these Science magicians grab power from?
They usurped power from all the ancient practitioners of magic: Popes, priests, kings and all manner of Masters of Woo.
magic (n)
Late 14c., magike, "art of influencing or predicting events and producing marvels using hidden natural forces," also "supernatural art," especially the art of controlling the actions of spiritual or superhuman beings; from Old French magique "magic; magical," from Late Latin magice "sorcery, magic," from Greek magike (presumably with tekhnē "art"), fem. of magikos "magical," from magos "one of the members of the learned and priestly class," from Old Persian magush, which is possibly from PIE root *magh- "to be able, have power."
Magic, or magik, does have a PIE root. It is *magh- "to be able, have power." Which is why we say, "Your Majesty", call the Three Wise Men from the East "Magi", marvel at how "majestic" a mountain peak is, call a Sillyicon Valley tech-billionaire a "mogul", and why we call a magician a "magician."
It's all about Power.
So what Scientist-magicians have done with the Enlightenment era (error?), is to steal magic or power from the powerful, emasculate Magic itself and substitute the quotidian, mundane, ordinary and humdrum. That they did this to the Rulers is well documented. What is not so well advertised is that they also stole magic from the People. Having stolen our magic and usurped our power, Scientists then promised that we could all return to the Wonderland of Magic, but only by means of their artifice and technical wizardry. All others routes or brands are banned.
Now that, you have to admit, is one neat fucking trick!

Found an Apple Watch on the street in one of Melbourne’s suburbs. It’s out of power. I understand these can be difficult to return to owners. I’ll be taking it to the cop shop in the next few days. If anyone has lost one, send me some a description of the watch and what suburb lost in.
