2021.12.04 22:11 violetlightning_ Primary care physician recommendations

I moved here a couple years ago, and haven’t found a new PCP yet. I’ve been struggling with my mental health lately, and am looking into going back on medication for this. Does anyone have any recommendations for a PCP in the area who is understanding of mental health challenges? Loved my old primary but unfortunately not worth a two hour trip for every dr visit. Thanks!

2021.12.04 22:11 JeffTennis American wanting to road trip for a bit in the UK? (Update 2 with pics/video clips)

Hello everyone, been back home a few days in the US now, and just getting over the jet lag and fatigue and catching up on sleep. I originally was posting this in AskUK since that was where my original thread was, but the mods from there asked me to post it here.
Here are some pictures and videos from my 11ish day road trip around Scotland, England, and Wales I took about 4,000 photos and videos my two weeks, so I just tried to weave through and grab the best photos and clips I could. Can upload more if enough people ask for.
If you guys would like to ask me any questions about my travel and experience, I'd be happy to reply.
Got heavily criticized in my thread a few weeks ago for wanting to do this. Been in the UK for 8 days now. Everything has gone smoothly with driving. Took me a few hours to get used to the sitting in the right side of the car and driving in the left side of the road. My hands were a bit discombobulated and even confused doing normal tasks. I haven’t killed anyone or gotten into a car accident. I can drive here in my sleep now.
Day 1 - Arrived into Edin airport. Got my Covid test and hire car and immediately went to Arthur’s Seat as I only had two hours of sunlight. Was a beautiful success. Got great pics of Seat and from Salisbury Craggs. Afterwards parked in downtown Edinburgh and walked around a bit. Bought my Severus Snape Wand on Victoria Street. Afterwards started making my way to fort William to hike Nevis. Stopped by tesco and TK Maxx to buy some necessities. Weird it’s TK here, stateside it’s TJ maxx. Drove through strirling. Arrived near Fort William around 4am. Parked in a pitch black layby and tried to take a nap.
Day 2- Couldn’t fall asleep, drove to Nevis around 6am and started the hike on no sleep. This was the only day in the forecast it wasn’t gonna rain until 3pm. Got to the top but clouds came in. A successful and beautiful hike nonetheless. I’ve been to every national park in the US and hiked about 40 mountains in the last 15 months. And the views of Nevis of all the surrounding lochs and other mountains is a top 3 view I’ve ever seen. Afterwards went into fort William and went to mercaris for my first Scottish meal. Fish and chips, fried haggis, fried black pudding, macaroni and cheese, and a scotch pie. Was so hungry after hiking knocked it all out. Parked next to some other cars in downtown fort William and fell asleep. No police tickets or anything.
Day 3: Woke up early before sunrise to head to Loch Eilt to see Dumbledore’s Gravesite. Clouds and gloomy sky made it look just like the movies. Perfect. Decided I was gonna go drive to Isle of Skye since it was clear skies for most of the day. Drove past Glenfinnan Viaduct and was wondering why it looked so familiar. U-turned and hiked up to get a picture. Unfortunately the train is not in season so no Hogwarts express photo. Started driving towards Isle of Skye since all the ferries were booked. Had to stop every 5 minutes tk take photos. The drive from Fort Augustus to Portree is one of the best scenic drives I’ve ever seen. Was able to get to Old Man and did that hike for 2 hours before sunset at 445. Went back into Porter and got another fish and chips and a cheese and chips butty and a haggis and sweetcorn pizza. Pulled over next to some of the bigger camper and rvs in a nearby layby near old man and went to sleep.
Day 4: Woke up to my car shaking violently from the 30-40mph winds. Couldn’t see outside of my window because of the rain and fog. Had planned on doing Qiuarang. Drove to the parking spot for the hike and weather somehow doubled in intensity and got worse. So no Q hike for me. Drove towards Inverness to see Loch Ness at Dores Beach. Got there 10 minutes too late. Decided to drive up to Inverness and get an Airbnb.
Day 5: went to dores beach and saw Loch Ness. Was considering driving back to Portree to do the smaller Qiuarang hike but weather looked too questionable. Basically a rest day.
Day 6: woke up from a random layby and went to see the Three Sisters of Glencoe. Also hiked a bit near Hagrid’s Hut and then stopped by the SKYFALL James Bond spot on the way to Glasgow. Spent the night in Glasgow visiting a friend. We hit up a few pubs in city centre. Slept.
Day 7: woke up in Glasgow. Had to go back to city centre to get some souvenirs. Was strongly considering buying Arsenal tickets at Liverpool. Decided against it. Drove back to Edinburgh to take a few more pictures. Then started driving towards Leeds. Met a fellow redditor here who was nice enough to agree to let me stay in for the night. Great gentlemen and had a few beers and wonderful chat.
Day 8 - Left Leeds in the AM to drive towards Lake District. Did a nice hike there and weather was off and on. Went to one of the small towns close to the motorway away from Lake District and ate Greggs for first time. I think I’m gonna get fat eating all of those pastries. Arrived in to Manchester to take a photo of Old Trafford around 830pm. Then started driving towards Liverpool. Stopped into a chippy in Preston before going to Anfield. Got my photo there. Started the drive towards Snowdonia. Took the Mersey tunnel. Glad you can use contactless pay for tolls here. In the US everything is still cash or mail-to later. Arrived in some layby in the countryside of North Wales about an hour before snowdonia. Slept.
Day 9 - woke up and drove towards Snowdonia. Got in today around 830. Started the hike at 9. Decided on Crip Goch because of clear skies. I knew and was told the ridge is very dangerous. Hike started beautifully but big winds came. Had to decide whether to do the Pyg or Crib. Said why not I’m only here today so went with Crib. Brutal climb to the ridge with the winds. Even scarier once on the ridge. I’ve hiked all over and this was the first time I genuinely was nervous about my safety because of how strong the winds were. Started snow flurrying also. Got to Snowdon summit around 4. Had to hike the last 3 hours back to the car park in darkness with my head lamp. Got out late so tried to find welsh food. As close as I could get was a pizza place in Snowdonia and got a Welsh rarebit pizza.
Day 10: Woke up at a random layby in Wales and started driving to Hardwick Hall to get a photo. Got that, then headed towards Oxford. Was a bit tired from all the hikes and pulled over into a service station to nap for a bit. By the time I got to Oxford it was too late to see any of the Harry Potter stuff, so just had dinner at an Indian restaurant. Some of the, if not the best chicken tikka masala I've ever had, for dinner.
Day 11: Woke up and made my way southeast towards London. First thing I tried to do was go see the grave of Matt Monro. Monro is as popular as The Beatles in the Philippines and his music still plays on radio stations. Was my grandpa and dad's favorite singer. Tried to get a photo but when I got there, the front desk lady at the crematory told me his headstone was removed. Drove 10 minutes to Abbey Road to get my photo there. Drove towards Oxford Circus to park my car in for the day. Took the tube around Westminster, to the Emirates, and to Kings Cross to see Platform 9 3/4. Drove far East to have dinner with my friend from the US. Napped at his place a bit, then went to get some last few photos. Went to Tottenham Stadium and almost got into a fight wearing my Arsenal scarf to take a photo lol. Traffic was getting really bad so made my way towards Gatwick, almost 2 hours. There was a major slowdown on the Motorway towards Gatwick, I think a few accidents. Thus, my ETA got pushed back an hour. Took my COVID test in a drive thru. Stupid GPS took me to the wrong place twice to drop my hire car off. That cost me another 35-40 minutes. Get to the hire car dropoff, pack as much as I can and start rushing to the terminal. Realized I left my passport, had the agent drive on over to give it to me. In the US you can sometimes get to the gate 20-30 minutes before liftoff. I was about 55 minutes from flight time due to all the delays. Agent says I missed the check-in for flight. I'm devastated. Ended up having to spend about 600 pounds for a new flight same day so I could make it on time to be home for Thanksgiving (American Holiday).
Also want to note, all the Brits I’ve met have been supremely helpful and awesome. Whether retail worker helping me find a jacket, or McDonald’s worker bantering with me because I’m American, or just the random people I’ve met and talked to in public and on the hiking trails. Scotland was absolutely gorgeous even with the mist and fog and rain. The Highlands might be my new favorite place in all of Earth and I can’t wait to go back there. I’ve had great political discussions with scots, english, and welsh folks. Fascinating to talk to people here about politics after seeing it through the US news filter for many years. I also want to say, I may never eat French fries( chips) back home without salt and vinegar ever again. It has been a game changer. I usually am not a fan of salt and vinegar chips (crisps) but man the chips here with salt and vinegar with the fish, have been mindblowingly delicious. Also prefer the thicker cuts than the skinny fries with have in US.

2021.12.04 22:11 JadedMemories Makeup brands you're breaking up with

I think this is a good idea to reduce spending. I'm breaking up with some brands, and blocking them altogether, so that I can't purchase from them.
Main one for me is Colourpop. It is FAR too easy for me to buy makeup from them like every month. The sales, constant releases, fact that I love their formulas - my biggest offender, and they need to go. Like their whole business model gets you to buy buy buy without end.
Second one for me is Hourglass. I've never bought anything from them but I'm going to stop wanting things from them, because it's insanely expensive and as a medium complexion, I'm limited with their shade offerings. Still, their products are dreamy with the finishes that I'm after, so they're too tempting.
Third is Sigma... I have a weird inclination to keep buying their brushes even though I already have so many. I have everything I need and then some. Plus, of all the brushes I've bought for them, only half were worth what I paid. The others... So not. If I need any new brushes, I'm just gonna get some Real Techniques, because for the look I go for, I really don't need the tons of brushes I have.
Honourable mentions go to Natasha Denona, HUDA and Tarte. All for the same reasons - expensive, and unnecessary (because I already have enough makeup. I need to stop yearning for their products).
What about you guys?

2021.12.04 22:11 noBSbaking123 Baking Temps for Optimal Oven Spring and Finished Quality

I have been looking around the internet at baking times for various bakery products and was shocked at the huge variation in both times and temperatures being recommended by people apparently trying to teach people how to bake correct. Temperatures ranging from 500 F to 350 F - 25 minutes to 75 min - Hot oven for oven Spring etc.... blah blah blah.
Now firstly I will say that every home oven is different - Some ovens attain accurate temperatures, some do not - Some ovens can hold or maintain temperatures quite well, others experience significant temperature swings (UP DOWN) through the baking cycle.
Without getting too nerdy on this I leave you with these thoughts

  1. Ideally bakers try to bake bread at times and temperatures that bake as quickly as possible to penetrate and "set" the internal crumb ( baked all the way through) to attain a internal temp of approx. 190 F for most breads (210 F for Rye Bread) whilst considering both maillard reaction and caramelization (Browning of the crust) to a level desired for the finished product. And further, to maintain as much moisture as they can and still get the eating quality and finished texture deemed optimum for the type or style of product they are making.
  2. Most breads are baked (internal chamber temperature) no higher than 440 F ( I would say 420 - 435 ) is the most common range for most bread types produced by most commercial bakeries.YES there are exceptions - high sugar products as an example.
  3. 40 Minutes is lots of time for most breads ( 25 - 35 ) I believe being optimum across a broad range of standard bread products. To Much time = Dry bread = Faster Staling = reduced eating quality. YES there also is exceptions - Heavy, dense breads - specialty holiday breads.
  4. Oven SPRINGTo the contrary of what many say out there online...Oven Spring is NOT enhanced by having a hot oven. A cooler temperature at the first phase of baking promotes oven spring ( the crust forms a slower at a lower temp...basic baking!) Combined with steam and lower first phase temp will provide optimum oven spring. Bakers have know this for "ever" however channels like the Food Geek have just clued into this and finally are teaching proper baking process.
If you want to optimize oven spring REDUCE the Temperature of your oven for the first phase (10 minutes) of baking. Generally oven spring is completed within this time period...Not 20 minutes like many online sources say.
If you want to explore this a bit further I have a short 5 minute video on bake times and temperatures here that I recently posted.

2021.12.04 22:11 Lysimachiakis Biweekly Telephone Game v3 (358)

This is a game of borrowing and loaning words! To give our conlangs a more naturalistic flair, this game can help us get realistic loans into our language by giving us an artificial-ish "world" to pull words from!
The Telephone Game will be posted every Monday and Friday, hopefully.
Rules 1) Post a word in your language, with IPA and a definition.
Note: try to show your word inflected, as it would appear in a typical sentence. This can be the source of many interesting borrowings in natlangs (like how so many Arabic words were borrowed with the definite article fossilized onto it! algebra, alcohol, etc.)
2) Respond to a post by adapting the word to your language's phonology, and consider shifting the meaning of the word a bit!
3) Sometimes, you may see an interesting phrase or construction in a language. Instead of adopting the word as a loan word, you are welcome to calque the phrase -- for example, taking skyscraper by using your language's native words for sky and scraper. If you do this, please label the post at the start as Calque so people don't get confused about your path of adopting/loaning.

2021.12.04 22:11 throwaway2333341245 Reneging and Cornell Career services

I'm in a thorny situation.
I recently accepted an offer from Company A. I didn't see them at career fairs, but they do have a person who is the dedicated "Cornell recruiter".
I'm now expecting an offer from Company B, who I'd prefer to work for. They've held events at Cornell before, mostly of the info session variety.
I'm thinking about reneging Company A for Company B. What will happen to me if Company A tells Cornell? I know I'll lose handshake privileges etc, but will Cornell also try to get my offer from Company B rescinded?
